Front Cover Session

I was really looking forward to this session because the front cover is such an important part of a magazine and helps to set the tone for the rest of it. Looking at front covers as a kid was how I got into reading magazines. Even though I agree with the quote” don’t judge a book by its cover” I wanted to make my front cover aesthetically pleasing to look at. We had to create 6 outcomes, 3 inspired by Elle and 3 inspired by DAZED. I knew which images I wanted to use for all of the outcomes right away because I had so many that matched Elle magazine and DAZED’s aesthetic. I was surprised to learn that some Magazines have identities in their own covers. An example of that would be that Plastik Magazine is always pink and that ID Magazine always has the cover star closing an eye or covering an eye. Something I would do next time that I wish I did is to come up with a theme for my magazine so that I have a cover identity just like other magazines do. Overall, I was happy with my experimentations and outcomes and the range of styles I tried to do. I tried to create a diary-like cover and I also tried to create a elegant and put-together cover. I ended up being really happy with one of my DAZED inspired covers so I decided to use that as my official cover.
